Good Thing #13 - Stereo Music

Music is good again! I know, controversial take! I've had a lot of issues with music recently... thought it was perhaps part of the ageing process, where music becomes less and less important. I thought it might be something underlying within Spotify that made it seem an almost dead medium. Thought it might have been because nearly all music is made and performed by the kids of rich parents (see this sticker we made). Whilst all those things play a part, it turned out to be something else..

In the spirit of ease and convenience, I succumbed to Spotify at some point about 10 years ago. At the time it was quite an endeavour to play Spotify through an amp with passive speakers so I eventually ditched my amp and stereo speakers and used the single Sonos 1 speaker. So for the last 10 or so years I've listened to music out of a mono blob.

I have no idea how I accepted this, and put up with this for 10 years. I studied music recording at university and well aware how music is recorded. Spacing sounds in a 'soundstage' left to right, forward and back to give a metaphorical 'wall of sound'. Not out of a single blob mono speaker. Its not how it is recorded or meant to be listened to!

I recently changed so the set up so its now stereo, its like my ears have had wax in for 10 years and now I can hear again! Music is good!

I'm now a truther for stereo music... If you have a Sonos or bluetooth speaker - get a 2nd, make a stereo pair out of them and enjoy music again!  To double than enjoyment, get rid of streaming devices (compressed to death music doesn't sound good) and listen to the CD or vinyl on some passive speakers
